The product of extensive psychometric research, expert advisory reviews, and innovative software development, the Office 2000 certification examinations verify knowledge and productivity in a series of  “real world” desktop activities. The format for these exams hinges on Microsoft’s design vision for Office 2000.  Microsoft Office 2000 was developed around the idea that the ability to easily share and disseminate information via local and global networks enhances productivity in the business and academic workplace.  Accordingly, the MOUS certification examinations seek to verify a user’s ability to capitalize on Office 2000’s enhanced connectivity, as well as performance of standard business tasks.

This new generation of MOUS certification takes long strides in computer-based testing. To more closely simulate the business/academic experience, the examination software runs concurrently with its respective Office 2000 application. Each activity or question on the Office 2000 MOUS exams is comprised of several individually-scored subtasks.  A timer is available, enabling exam candidates to budget time. (Note: The Office 2000 MOUS examinations are enabled to allow extended exam time for candidates with qualified disabilities.) Additionally, a “reset” option allows candidates to refresh a background document and start the task anew.

The scoring format for the Office 2000 exams has also undergone substantial development. Unlike earlier MOUS exams, the results of the Office 2000 MOUS examinations are expressed as a value on a 1000 point scale, rather than a percentage. On this new scale, a candidate’s score is derived from the number of subtasks successfully completed and the “weight,” or difficulty, assigned to each. Task weights and passing score totals were carefully derived from a combination of expert assessments and psychometric analyses of beta test results for each Office 2000 MOUS examination.

Candidate feedback on the exams is provided by reference to a passing percentage within each “skill set.” Skill sets are conceptual categories of application mastery. They are  comprised of several detailed objectives from which the actual exam questions and tasks are drawn.

Individuals and organizations alike will benefit from Office 2000 MOUS certification. MOUS certification offers:

a means for individuals to demonstrate their knowledge of the world’s most recognized and utilized suite of business applications, as well as many important business concepts;
a standard by which employers can recruit candidates with the most current desktop skills;
a baseline for academic institutions to measure desktop preparation;
a means for training organizations to verify and measure training results;
a tool corporations can use to elevate productivity;
and a nationally recognized credential which both employers and job applicants can use for successful placement.
